Plot Summary:Mary Gordon, following the influence of her heart, marries beneath her station, and after a year of happiness awakens to find herself a widow with a child in her arms, penniless in a cheap tenement. She starts out to find the home of her husband's parents, but, strange to say, she finds herself an object of suspicion and discredited as a wife. She shows her wedding ring and marriage certificate to the flinty-hearted pair, but Mother Gordon is a sullen woman and has the backing of her husband in looking askance at the poor young mother who had married her son and been too proud to visit them before. She begs them to care for little Billy baby while she goes back to the city to care for herself. She leaves her few treasures with the crusty couple, including her photograph, so that the baby may grow up to remember his mother, and the certificate to proclaim his legitimacy. The months fly by, the young widow takes courage and grows in grace; likewise finds favor in the eyes of her employer, Irving Freeman. He will never listen to her explanations of her former marriage, but she longs for her child. Five years elapse; she and her husband are in affluence and the game of bridge is their absorbing pastime. The Freemans give a swell function at their home that is reported in the papers. Although the Gordons have up to this time made no sign, they have followed the fortunes of Mary with interest, and now the prospect of \"easy money,\" through circulating a scandal or demanding a shakedown for $500 takes possession of the crabbed couple, despite the fact that Mary has always contributed to the support of the child. They start to the city with this purpose in view, and little Billy, wonderfully acute for his age, is taken for \"first aid\" in the scheme. He has hidden away in his blouse the beloved photograph of his mother and the certificate in which it was wrapped as it lay in the old bureau drawer. They instruct Billy to remain at the station until they return, and start for the Freeman mansion. Billy is not content to be cooped up, and, wrapping his candy in his paper, starts out to see the big town on his own account. He promptly gets lost, meets a kind lady, shows her his mother's photograph, and she, being a friend, takes him to the house. The Gordons get there first and have started something by their diabolical accusations, when Billy is ushered upon the scene. He recognizes his mother and she clasps him in her arms, with the photograph in one hand and his candy in the other. The paper in which he has wrapped his sweets happens to be her marriage certificate. The Gordons are allowed to depart in peace, and Billy boy is the hero of the hour in a new home where happiness and confidence have been restored by his fortunate advent.
