种族歧视类型的电影在当年挺多的，具有一定的警示意义。剧情就不谈了，比较平庸。罗西这次将电影的最高潮放在了倒数第二幕，最后还给了观众一个喘息的时间，很难得。
对种族问题处理得很含混，光靠几个理想主义的明理人做表难以真正祛除种族仇恨，反而把矛盾激化，看似圆满的结局谁又能肯定没有祸根被埋下。小城人的尖酸刻薄被刻画得淋漓尽致，更讽刺的是他们还虚伪地自诩友好亲善。
