致敬陀思妥耶夫斯基的《赌徒》（罗伯特.西奥德梅克曾搬上银幕），主人公也以老师身份与学生探讨陀思妥耶夫斯基。剧作朴实直接，突如其来的自我毁灭似乎也影响了《出租车司机》的结尾，难怪斯科塞斯有翻拍它的打算。对主人公嗜赌成性的刻画入木三分，不过有些情节现在看起来难免有些拖泥带水。
